Haseleler’s splendid aerial photograph of the 1930’s shows the semi – circular north – south axis created in the 1860’s along the western edges of the Fort walls for the renewed Fort precinct. This axis was later anchored at one end with the grand Victoria Terminus (1878 – 1888) and at the other end by the Gateway of India (completed 1924). The palm – edged Oval Maidan can be seen to the left, fronting the High Court, Bombay University and Secretariat. To the north of the Oval are the BB & CI Headquarters and the Marine Lines bungalows and to the south, the bandstand. In the foreground are the Royal Institute of Science and the Prince of Wales Museum to the right, with the wide Esplanade Road in between.
